Character Name: Stiles Stilinski
Series: Teen Wolf
From When?: From near the end of "The Divine Move" as he contemplates quite literally falling on a sword to save everyone he loves.
Warden: Stiles has an uncanny ability to read people in scarily accurate ways. He also has a tendency to put other people's lives before his own. When his best friend was turned into a werewolf, it was Stiles who helped him figure out how to get his new-found powers under control. When another friend learned she was a banshee, it was Stiles who believed in her and her abilities to help other people and helped her begin to trust her own instincts. He's good at helping people solve their problems and deal with their issues, whatever they may be.
Item: His aluminum baseball bat.
Abilities/Powers: High level of intelligence. Intuitive to the point of scariness when it comes to other people. Has been shown to be able to manipulate mountain ash with his mind though that hasn't been explored much yet -- it's been heavily hinted at during various points in the series that Stiles may be a druid emissary at some point, but so far nothing has come of that. Aside from the mountain ash manipulation which only occurred once, Stiles has no supernatural abilities that have been shown (unless he's possessed).
Personality: While he presents to most as being somewhat of a smart ass, ADD teen, Stiles is actually very smart and tends to be ahead of the game when it comes to figuring out the weirdness that happens in Beacon Hills. He also tends to make poor life decisions. For instance, he drags his best friend Scott into the woods one night after overhearing one of his dad's phone calls saying that part of a body's been found and they need the sheriff and his deputies to come help find the other half. He's excited about this because usually nothing interesting happens in the town. He convinces Scott to go into the woods to see if they can find it first. Sheriff Stilinski ends up catching him and wondering where his "usual partner in crime" is, and Stiles lies and tells him Scott was at home in bed, while Scott hides behind a tree to avoid getting into trouble. Unfortunately this leaves Scott alone in the woods shortly later and he is bitten by a werewolf named Peter Hale.
Stiles pays very close attention to detail and when Scott begins acting out-of-the-norm (exploding in anger, having sudden physical skills that he didn't have before, etc), Stiles begins researching lycanthropy. He's the first to put together that Scott is indeed a werewolf. He latches onto the theory and tries to convince his best friend that he's cursed, but Scott doesn't take that news very well at first. Stiles is persistent in his belief, and he proves to be right.
Stiles comes up with a lot of bad plans in the early part of the series. He and Scott dig up the other part of Laura Hale's body (the girl whose body they were looking for when Scott was bitten), and when Scott wonders what will happen if Derek Hale -- the man they suspect killed her -- comes home early while they are digging in his yard, Stiles' response is, "I have a plan for that. You run one way, I'll run the other...whoever he catches first...too bad!" Early on especially he tends to leap ahead into things without looking to watch where he's going or think about the possible consequences.
Despite his casual disregard for rules and laws, Stiles is also a loyal friend and son, and fills the role of "sidekick" to his best friend Scott. Stiles has a lot of gut feelings, and he tends to trust them because they're usually right. He is able to piece together things about various crimes and strange occurrences faster than anyone else in his circle of friends. Whenever there is trouble, Stiles somehow finds himself in the middle of it with his friends, trying to figure things out and make them better.
While he does get angry sometimes, he also generally suppresses it and channels it into something more positive. He's not afraid to call someone out when they've done something wrong, even if it's someone he loves, like Scott. At heart, Stiles is not really a bad person, but he definitely falls into shades of gray. When there is a new threat in town, his normal first suggestion is "Let's just kill them" or "let's let them die." Despite this, he tends to contradict his own words on a regular basis. He suggests to Scott on more than one occasion to kill or let Derek Hale die, but then he ends up saving Derek's life more than once.
Once he's attached to someone, such as Lydia or even Derek, he's protective even when it puts his own life on the line. At one point, all in one episode, Stiles endangers his own life twice to save other people. The first is another werewolf named Ethan that he doesn't like or trust -- he throws himself at Ethan to keep him from killing himself with an operating, electric handsaw to the gut. Later, he steps into a puddle of gasoline to keep Scott from killing himself by lighting himself on fire with a flare.
He tends to feel guilt when it comes to the death of his mother, though it's never been revealed why. Her illness (recently revealed to be frontotemporal dementia), left a hole in his life that he's never been able to fill. He was eight when she died, and he suffered frequent panic attacks, insomnia, night terrors, and sleep walking after. This was all compounded by the fact that his dad drowned himself in alcohol and his job for an undetermined amount of time, though it's never been hinted at that Sheriff Stilinski was at all abusive to Stiles in any way. Stiles fears that his dad does, however, also blame him for his mother's death, as is revealed to be his biggest fear in season two during a hallucination induced by ingesting wolfsbane.
Stiles also feels guilty anytime something threatens his dad that stems from the weirdness that he's involved with. His love for his family and friends is both a strength and weakness. When things get to be overwhelming to Stiles, he tends to have panic attacks.
Stiles' life changed when Scott was bitten and became a werewolf. He's a bit more intense and paranoid than he used to be. He is surrounded by other werewolves, hunters, a banshee, and a host of other supernaturally-inclined individuals. He's very protective of certain people in his life, and if you intentionally (or even unintentionally) hurt one of them, he'll probably hold a grudge against you forever, or at least a very long time. He also has the general mindset that he's the most expendable member of the pack due to his lack of abilities.
Barge Reactions: After having been possessed by a demonic fox spirit called a nogitsune for the last several weeks and literally killing people while possessed, Stiles won't be very phased by the barge. He's seen so many strange and unbelievable things by this point, and done so many strange and unbelievable things, that nothing really seems out of the realm of possibility anymore. He's also become rather jaded and close to losing hope for things getting any better.
The idea that fictional people are real may throw him temporarily, but Stiles is not the type to sit in denial about anything for long. He might be frustrated that he can't use the internet to research what's going on or to help people who might benefit from the research, but he won't be surprised about the existence of characters that are vampires or other supernaturals, considering his best friend is a true alpha werewolf.
Physically, he will not be in the greatest shape for awhile. He's very weak, has lost significant weight, and has been without his Adderall and sleep for an extended period of time. Mentally, he'll be even worse off. He's carrying the weight of a lot of guilt on his shoulders, and the mental images of causing his friends and family pain will haunt him for a long time to come.
History: Stiles is the only child of Beacon Hills' Sheriff Stilinski and the now deceased Claudia Stilinski. Stiles' mother died when Stiles was eight years old, from a long battle with frontotemporal dementia. He was with her when she died, while his father was out on the scene of a car crash. Sheriff Stilinski showed up at the hospital to find Stiles sitting in the waiting room with his head in his hands after his mom has passed away. He blames himself for her death (for unknown reasons at this point in canon), and he fears that one day his father will blame him for it, too. His greatest fear is that his father will not only blame Stiles for Claudia's death, but also that he will regret having Stiles at all.
His closest relationship aside from his dad, is with his best friend, Scott McCall. They grew up together and have been best friends for as long as they can remember. Stiles was the first to figure out that Scott was becoming a werewolf after he was bitten by a wolf in the woods. He stood by Scott's side and did everything he could to help him deal with all the challenges that come with being a werewolf. Ever since Scott was turned, Stiles' life has been pretty weird. It also brought new people into their circle of friends: Allison Argent, Derek Hale (though his relationship with Derek is complicated and he alternates between being afraid of the man and being annoyed with him, to actually feeling sympathy and protectiveness toward him), Isaac Lahey, Lydia Martin, Cora Hale, Jackson Whitmore, Boyd and Erica Reyes.
Whenever there is trouble, Stiles somehow finds himself in the middle of it with his friends, trying to figure things out and make them better. He frequently fears for his father's safety and finally tells him the truth about the supernatural goings on in Beacon Hills. Sheriff Stilinski gets angry with him, not believing him, and when Stiles asks Cora Hale (another werewolf) to show him proof, she faints to the ground unconscious.
He's been in love with Lydia Martin since the "third-frickin'grade" even though it's an unrequited love. The two share a kiss when Stiles begins having an uncontrollable panic attack after his dad is taken by Jennifer Blake (who turns out to be a being called a Darach, who feeds off the energy of human sacrifices in order to appear as a normal human).
He and Allison and Scott agree to be sacrifices of their own in order to save their respective parents. They are warned ahead of time by Deaton that they will return to life with a darkness around their hearts. The three carry through with the sacrifice and are brought back after seventeen hours, knowing where the Darach is holding their parents -- in an old root cellar. Scott goes to meet back up with Deucalion, and Allison and Stiles split up on separate tasks in order to save their families. Stiles is on his way to where they're being kept when the Darach causes a terrible storm. Stiles winds up crashing his jeep into a tree and gets knocked unconscious. He wakes up and makes it to where the parentals are being held captive in time to use his aluminum baseball bat to prop up the collapsing cellar.
Weeks later, after the Darach and the alpha pack have been defeated, Stiles and the others begin experiencing unsettling side effects from their sacrifices. Stiles is having nightmares that he has to scream himself awake from, as well as being unable to determine the difference between his dream life and reality.
When a killer named Barrow shows up looking for new student Kira Yukimura, Stiles puts the pieces together in time to stop him from harming her. Then he begins to realize he may have been the one to send Barrow after her. He tells Scott but Scott assures him that it couldn't have been Stiles, and tells Stiles to get some rest. He seeks out Melissa McCall's assistance and she sedates him so he can sleep for awhile. When he wakes up, he wanders down the hall only to be confronted by three demons called Oni. To his own surprise, he kills them with his bare hands.
Shortly after it's revealed that he is possessed, Stiles ends up sleepwalking to a cave in the woods and calling Scott for help. He hallucinates that he is in the basement of Eichlen House -- the local mental institution. Though his dad, Scott, Lydia and the others look for him, it is Scott's parents who find him. He's taken to the hospital for an exam to make sure he's there. Stiles ends up getting an MRI. He reveals to Scott that the doctor is checking for symptoms of frontotemporal dementia -- the same disease that killed his mother in 2004. The doctor gives the results to Stiles' dad and Scott's mom -- he indeed is ill.
During the MRI, Stiles is completely taken over by the nogitsune. He threatens Kira's mother, almost kills Isaac through an electric shock, and disappears from the hospital. During this time, he causes a great deal of off-screen chaos around time, before resurfacing in the basement of Beacon Hills High School. He's immediately attacked by Aidan and Ethan, but Scott stops them before they can hurt him. He tells them he's himself, that he knows that the nogitsune has been making plans, and after a series of terrible "accidents," it's revealed he's still under the influence of the nogitsune and hasn't been himself at all. He's been feeding on the chaos, strife and pain that he's caused, and he injures Scott. Before he can do any worse damage, Deaton drugs him with wolf-lichen, which essentially puts the nogitsune spirit to sleep temporarily.
Afraid of hurting Scott or anyone else again, Stiles has himself committed to Eichlen House, where he meets back up with former coyote Malia Tate, whom Scott helped return to being a human earlier in the season. As it turns out, Malia's not very happy about being human again and she wants to get back to being a coyote. She agrees to help Stiles get to the basement of the Eichlen House if he can help her return to her former state. While the two of them are in the basement going over old records, they share a moment of passion, though it's unclear as to whether they slept together or just made out.
Stiles is retaken over by the nogitsune and flees the Eichen House, setting an elaborate plan into motion that brings nearly everyone on his chessboard together in a battle to either kill him or save him. It is revealed that Stiles isn't sick after all, that it was a trick the nogitsune used to get Stiles to give up what bit of hope he was still clinging onto. The nogitsune cuts Stiles' stomach open, releasing flies that infect and possess Isaac, Aidan, Ethan, and Derek. Ethan and Aidan end up almost killing each other, and then Isaac almost ends up killing both of them, stopped in time by Allison and Kira, while Derek turns on Chris Argent, who ends up freeing himself. Meanwhile, Scott and Lydia go into Stiles' mind and manage to separate the nogitsune from Stiles.
However, Stiles is very weak, in a lot of pain, and freezing cold. Scott is able to tell this immediately upon a simple touch to Stiles' hand as he begins drawing pain away from his best friend without even trying -- the first time this has occurred on the show. As the nogitsune grows stronger, Stiles grows weaker. The nogitsune -- Stiles' now evil doppleganger -- kidnaps banshee Lydia Martin to predict when the Oni are coming to kill him, and at the last minute, he snaps the last kitsune tail and is able to control them himself. While Scott and Stiles go to find Lydia in the tunnels beneath Eichen House, Allison, Isaac and Kira fight the Oni. Allison is killed with a sword to the stomach and dies in Scott's arms moments later.
Stiles feels immense guilt over her death, commenting that the only good thing is "it looks like I'm dying, too." As the rest of the pack forms a plan to kill the nogitsune once and for all, Stiles repeatedly states that if whatever they have to do to kill the demonic fox wearing his face, do it, even if it kills Stiles. Scott tells him that the plan is to save Stiles and that is the plan he's going with.
The nogitsune sets up an elaborate trick for Scott, Stiles, Kira and Lydia at the high school. It summons the Oni and tells Stiles that it's going to force Scott to kill Stiles in order to save everyone else. He tells the group that he has sent Oni to every place where Stiles has someone he cares about -- the sheriff's station, the hospital where Scott's mom works, the vet clinic where Deaton works. The final battle begins and the Oni begin fighting Scott and Kira. Stiles picks up Kira's fallen katana off the ground and places the point at his stomach, ready to kill himself to save his friends and family even as Scott yells at him to stop.
Sample Journal Entry:
Somehow this is...really not what I expected to happen when I finally died.
I mean, hey I love Greek mythology as much as the next guy who's occasionally had way too much time on his hands, but really, a boat? Who's driving this boat? Charon, is that you? Because I'm not sure that my dad --
[And oh god, that is when it hits him, he is dead and his dad is alone now and maybe falling onto a sword was yet another one of his plans he should have thought out a little better. But no, if it means that his dad is alive that is more important than being alone. Alive definitely tops alone when it comes to his dad.]
What if someone doesn't know they're supposed to pay the fee for me to cross the river? Am I going to be stuck on this boat for eternity now?
[And now fear has definitely crept into his voice. He is terrified. Granted, stuck on a boat for eternity did sound better than actually burning in hell, but this so isn't what Stiles has pictured over the years.]
[Another thought occurs to him and now he's even more freaked out.]
Is this where everyone ends up when they die?
Mom? Are you here, too?
He is on a boat. A boat. Two seconds ago he'd been about to impale himself on Kira's sword. How the hell had he gotten onto a boat? His friends were fighting Oni and the nogitsune and somehow he's found himself on a boat and none of them are anywhere in sight and he's freaked out. What if they all die because he didn't manage to finish the job? Because he hadn't actually gotten to kill himself on that sword? He rubs his hands over his very pale face, heart beating hard in his chest.
And then another thought occurs to him, that is less alarming. Maybe he has gone through with it. Maybe he did impale himself on Kira's sword. Maybe he died and that's why he's here. It doesn't look like heaven but it's not exactly how he's ever pictured hell either. Unless heaven or hell are actually boat shaped. He supposes that's not out of the realm of possibilities. Not after everything he's seen and done the last two years.
Does that mean it's over? Is the nogitsune really dead too, if he is? God he hopes so. The idea that he's dead and that monster isn't is terrifying. But if it is dead, then that's all that matters. It doesn't matter to Stiles if he is also dead. After all the blood that is on his hands, he knows he doesn't deserve to survive anyway. Not when Allison is dead. Not when all of those people from the hospital are dead. Not when he's almost killed Isaac and his dad and Scott. God. He almost killed Scott. All because he'd been too weak to breakthrough that thing's grip on his mind.
It's why it came after Stiles in the first place. Found and exposed every single one of his darkest fears and weaknesses, went after every single person who meant anything to Stiles at all. He shudders, leaning against the deck railing and shutting his eyes. He's dead. But he's on a boat and he isn't sure what that means. Obviously all the stories are right -- life does not end with death. This is something else. Something beyond. He looks around, feeling exhausted and kind of sick. Strange that even after he's died he feels like death warmed over. How utterly cliche. But his brain is far too tired to come up with anything wittier. He is drained entirely. He slowly sinks down until he's sitting on the floor of the boat, staring blankly at the water.
So this, he thinks, is what happens when you die.
